This project is for schools that do not currently have the capacity to benefit from the standard teaching for mastery offer (with or without Enhanced support). They need to be committed to making a long-term relationship with the Maths Hub to sustain improvements in maths.
Schools can join this project at any point during the academic year and support may unfold across more than one academic year.
An Intensive Support Partner (ISP) will focus their work with the school leadership and maths subject leadership to develop capacity and good foundations for implementing teaching for mastery. School leaders will create an implementation plan that sets out how the school will achieve the improvements identified.
There will be at least one named ‘Targeted Support Contact’ (TSC) in the supported school. Discretionary release grant funding may be provided to enable school leaders to prepare and lead improvements themselves, and to work with ISPs during school visits or other activities designed to develop participant schools’ capacity. The school must commit to working in partnership with the Maths Hub to ensure developments lead to sustained, positive outcomes.
Click on the options below to take a look at the intended outcomes for each of the following areas:
Pupils will:
• demonstrate improvement in a focused area linked to an initial bespoke development cycle.
The AMHL (Targeted Support) and/or Intensive Support Partner (ISP) will work with
the school/subject leaders to:
• gain leaders’ commitment to the underpinning principles of the Essence of Mathematics Teaching for Mastery.
• clarify the school’s vision for maths (aligned to the underpinning principles) and accurately describe how the current position relates to this.
• support the school in developing an implementation plan for maths which enables the school to move towards realising its vision.
• support development of current and future capacity within the school to implement and review the implementation plan.
• develop a stronger relationship between the school and the Maths Hub.
• ensure the Intensive support leads to the school being in an improved position to benefit from the Maths Hub’s standard teaching for mastery offer.
Leaders will:
• confidently assess and review the culture, systems and practices supporting the development of maths in their school.
• confidently explore future priorities for improvement in maths and plan ongoing developments for maths.
Teachers will:
• demonstrate developed practice in a focused area based on the diagnosis of needs.
Leaders will:
• understand the evidence relating to effective implementation (as detailed in the EEF’s (2024) A School’s Guide to Implementation) through the context of developing maths.
• understand the underpinning principles of teaching for mastery and what constitutes good foundations for implementing teaching for mastery.
Teachers will:
• demonstrate increased understanding in a focused area based on the diagnosis of needs.
This project is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme so is free to participating schools.
